farmer brownies

Our son, Mike’s most requested recipe has always been the farmer brownies. It’s made an appearance at every birthday of his for as long as I can remember, and now proudly took center stage at his wedding as his and his wife, Kacey’s wedding cake!

1 cup water
1 cup butter
1/3 cup cocoa
2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
2 eggs, beaten

½ cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla

¼ cup butter
¼ cup cocoa
¼ cup buttermilk
2 1/4 cups sifted icing sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Heat the first three ingredients until melted.
  3. Stir together all the dry ingredients. Beat in eggs, buttermilk and vanilla.
  4. Stir batter into the hot cocoa mix. Mix by hand (do NOT overmix).
  5. Pour into greased 10″ x 15″ cookie sheet and bake for 20 minutes.

  1. Combine the first three ingredients and bring to a boil.
  2. Beat in icing sugar and  vanilla.
  3. Pour over warm cake.

NOTE: No buttermilk? Make one cup of buttermilk by using 1 tablespoon white vinegar plus enough milk to make 1 cup.
